The Italian Cabinet approved on Monday a decree to maintain the flow of military aid to Ukraine throughout the year 2026, thus formalizing a compromise within the governing coalition.

The decision comes after weeks of debates that revealed divergences regarding foreign policy within the government led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, writes Reuters.

The agreement was reached following threats from the far-right party Liga, which maintained close ties with Vladimir Putin before the 2022 invasion. Liga had threatened to abstain from voting, a fact that would have deepened the fissures regarding Italy’s position towards the war.

The leader of Liga, Matteo Salvini, who holds the position of Deputy Prime Minister, argued that sending additional military aid could fuel corruption in Kiev and would not contribute to ending the conflict. Critics, on the other hand, accused him of promoting Putin’s agenda.

The new decree is similar to the projects approved in the last three years, stipulating that the government will transfer military vehicles, materials, and equipment to Ukraine.
