Belarus currently does not have available potassium volumes for delivery to the United States, stated the leader from Minsk, Aleksandr Lukashenko. The statement comes shortly after American President Donald Trump announced that his administration is working on a large-scale agreement for the purchase of Belarusian potassium, at a price he says would be significantly lower than what is currently paid to Canada.
“Even if we wanted to deliver potassium to other Western markets, we simply do not have such volumes. Everything is already contracted”, Lukashenko stated, according to his press service.
However, Trump presented the prospect of a significant agreement with Belarus. In a message posted on his Truth Social platform, he said that the acquisition of Belarusian potassium would be “very good news for American farmers and livestock breeders.”
“The United States is working on a large-scale agreement to purchase potassium from Belarus. The price will be much lower than what we are currently paying to Canada”, wrote the American president.
Canada, the main supplier for the American market
Potassium is a significant component of agricultural fertilizers, and Canada is the world’s largest supplier. According to data cited by the Canadian Press, approximately 80% of the potassium used by American farms comes from Canada.
Canada has remained, for now, exempt from some of the American tariffs applied to Canadian products, despite the trade conflict between Washington and Ottawa.
The prices of fertilizers have been influenced in recent years by various geopolitical and economic factors. Among these are Russia’s war against Ukraine, the conflict between the United States and Iran, and the disruptions in maritime transport associated with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
