The German Chancellor suspects that Moscow is behind the majority of drones observed in German airspace in recent days, which have forced the temporary closure of the Munich airport, according to Politico.
“We suspect that a significant part is probably controlled by Russia. But we are investigating the issue and, regardless of where it comes from, it represents a serious threat to our security,” Merz declared on public television Sunday evening.
Drones have been observed around the Munich airport in recent days, forcing authorities to close the runways and cancel flights. The cancellations stranded thousands of travelers, many of them attending Oktoberfest.

The observations occurred against a backdrop of a wave of drone-related disruptions affecting European airspace. European leaders have blamed the Kremlin for violations of Danish, Estonian, Norwegian, Romanian, and Polish airspace in separate incidents in recent weeks.
Merz compared the recent violations with incursions into European airspace during the Cold War, but these incidents, he added, did not occur as “frequently as in recent weeks”.
