During the cyberattacks of the past few days, hackers stole the personal data of 750,000 Moldovans. Attempts were made to access information on more than a million people—roughly half the country’s population.
The incidents took place between October 19 and 23. After identifying the problem, the e-Governance Agency ordered a review of 82 digital services and temporarily suspended those at risk. Several information systems were shut down.
The intervention contained the attack and prevented any further compromise, officials said.
At present, the main risk is that the data could be used in attempts at online fraud and manipulation, and citizens are urged to remain vigilant. Cybersecurity officials maintain that Moldovans’ banking details are not at risk.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing. Those affected will be informed about what happened and the findings of the investigation.
