Russian forces have begun the spring offensive in eastern Ukraine, including the use of dozens of tanks and armored vehicles, according to the Ukrainian army and analysts, reports CNN. The assault is escalating as Ukrainian President, Volodimir Zelenski, states he has a “very bad feeling” about the consequences of the Middle East conflict for his country.
“It is clear that our diplomatic meetings, trilateral meetings, are constantly postponed. There is only one reason: the war in Iran,” he told the BBC in an interview on Sunday.
“Putin will want a long war. For Putin, a prolonged war in Iran is an advantage,” he said — given that rising oil prices and the suspension of American sanctions on part of Russian oil benefit Russia’s economy. Against this backdrop, Russia is intensifying its attacks in eastern Ukraine.
“With the change in weather conditions, the Russian aggressor has intensified pressure on several sectors of the front,” said the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian army, Oleksandr Sîrski, on Friday. “For several days, the number of battle confrontations has exceeded 200,” he added, claiming that the Russians are losing over 1,000 soldiers a day.
