In an unusual attempt to counteract aerial attacks, the priests of the Russian Orthodox Church in the city of Perm organized a religious procession and a prayer service, carrying an icon of the Mother of God through the city streets, with the declared aim of “protecting” the area from Ukrainian drones, reports the Russian publication Ostorojno Novosti.
The event took place on May 12 and was initiated by the head of the Perm Metropolitanate, in the context of repeated attacks targeting the industrial infrastructure in the region.
Representatives of the Perm Diocese supported the initiative, asserting that such processions have a historical tradition during times of crisis.
“The encirclement of the holy relics around the cities and villages takes place during periods of complex historical events, significant social unrest, epidemics, and foreign invasions. History knows many cases where, through the prayers of the faithful, the Lord has sent his mercy and help, freeing them from enemy invasion,” the diocese’s press service conveyed.
The religious gesture comes against the backdrop of significant damage in the region. Just a few days before the procession, on May 8, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) struck the Permnaftoorgsintez refinery for the third time, as well as a local oil pumping station.
Similar attacks were reported on April 29 and 30 as well, targeting the same industrial area.
