The NATO Secretary General, Mark Rutte, stated that the Alliance’s summit held in Ankara demonstrated that the organization is “stronger than ever”, describing the meeting as a “remarkable success” and emphasizing the existence of a “strong sense of unity” among the 32 leaders of the member states.

In the press conference at the end of the summit, Rutte stated that the allies welcomed the role of American President Donald Trump, about whom he said “transforms the Alliance and makes it stronger.”

According to the NATO chief, member states have shown solid unity, and the Alliance is undergoing a process of “rebalancing”, in which European countries and Canada are taking on a larger share of the responsibility for common defense.

Rutte argued that this change addresses one of the main grievances expressed by Washington in recent years, namely the insufficient level of defense spending by European allies.

    Reaffirmed support for Ukraine

The Secretary General emphasized that NATO leaders have reaffirmed their strong support for Ukraine and their commitment to continue providing the necessary assistance for the country’s defense.

Furthermore, the member states reaffirmed their commitment to Article 5 of the NATO Treaty, the principle of collective defense according to which an attack against one ally is considered an attack against all.

These commitments are also included in the final statement adopted at the conclusion of the summit.
