The new President of the Slovenian Parliament, Zoran Stevanović, has announced plans to organize a referendum on the country’s withdrawal from NATO, local media reports cited by Kyiv Post. The leader of the Truth party argued that this initiative fulfills the promises made to citizens during the election campaign.
Stevanović argues that Slovenia must regain its full sovereignty, believing that the decision-making center for the country’s policies should return to Ljubljana, to the detriment of Brussels’ directives.
It remains to be seen to what extent Zoran Stevanović’s plans will take legal form and how Slovenian citizens will react to the prospect of a referendum that could fundamentally change the strategic orientation of the country. Such a move could create a significant precedent in the Balkan region, at a time when the unity of international organizations is being tested by multiple crises and paradigm shifts in the policies of major powers.
In his vision, Slovenia should follow a much more independent foreign policy and avoid involvement in foreign military or diplomatic conflicts that do not serve national interests.
