Donald Trump has sparked a wave of international controversy after stating that he should be directly involved in the election of Iran’s next supreme leader, comparing the current situation to his recent intervention in Venezuela.

Following the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei during airstrikes launched by the US and Israel, US President Donald Trump insists that Washington must be directly involved in the election of Iran’s future supreme leader. The statements, made on Thursday, March 5, in an interview with Axios, have fueled already heightened tensions in the region, notes Agerpres.

Donald Trump firmly rejected the possibility of Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the slain leader, taking over the supreme leadership of the Islamic Republic.

“Khamenei’s son is unacceptable to me. We want someone who will bring harmony and peace to Iran,” the American president declared, emphasizing that Washington must be involved in the succession process “just as it happened in Venezuela.”

“I need to be involved in the appointment, just as it was with Delcy (Rodriguez) in Venezuela,” he insisted, making a direct reference to the situation in Caracas, where Vice President Delcy Rodriguez temporarily took over the role of Nicolas Maduro after he was captured earlier this year in an operation led by an American commando.
