“The Trump administration is considering the closure of nearly 30 embassies and consulates abroad as part of a potential major reorganization of the United States’ diplomatic presence in the world, according to an internal document from the Department of State obtained by CNN.Among the embassies proposed for closure are those in Malta, Luxembourg, Lesotho, the Republic of Congo, the Central African Republic, and South Sudan. The list also includes five consulates in France, two in Germany, two in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and one each in the United Kingdom, South Africa, and South Korea.Additionally, there is a proposed reduction in diplomatic presence in Somalia and Iraq, two key countries in the US efforts to combat terrorism, as well as the “resizing” of other diplomatic outposts. It is not clear if Secretary of State Marco Rubio has officially approved the proposed closures. The proposed changes come in the context of a comprehensive review of the Department of State, as part of the larger efforts of the Trump administration to reduce the size of the federal government, under the direction of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), supported by Elon Musk.American embassies and consulates serve as essential points for the US foreign policy. They provide vital services such as visa processing, assistance to American citizens in distress, or collecting important information for Washington.Additionally, these diplomatic posts are key instruments of influence in the context of global strategic competition, particularly in countering China’s influence. Most of the targeted consulates do not have a large number of employees, but their closure could impact access to consular services and the US’s ability to maintain effective diplomatic relations in those regions.”
