A possible unification of the Republic of Moldova with Romania depends on the will of the citizens of both countries. Romanian Prime Minister Luca Niculescu made the statement in an interview with TVR Moldova. The Romanian official reiterated that strengthening ties between the two countries remains the priority.

Niculescu reiterated the Romanian government’s support for the Republic of Moldova’s European integration. At the same time, he said, the debate over unification is fraught with complexities, and it is the citizens who must have the final say.

“There are many ties between our countries, and this is clearly an ongoing debate, one that can take place even in difficult circumstances. Let me be very clear: it will happen when the citizens of both states want it. For now, we want to bring Romania closer to the Republic of Moldova, and the Republic of Moldova closer still to the European Union—to build these bridges and strengthen the connections between us,” the Romanian prime minister said.

Maia Sandu brought the debate over unification back onto the public agenda in early 2026. In a conversation with British journalists Rory Stewart and Alastair Campbell, the president said that, as a citizen, she would vote in favour of unification if a referendum were held. However, she noted that, as head of state, she understood that “there is no majority in favour of unification with Romania, but there is a majority in favour of joining the EU.”

The subject subsequently became a recurring topic in the Chișinău and Bucharest press, featuring in discussions with senior officials and politicians.
