The Russian Ambassador in Hungary was summoned on Thursday to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Budapest, following a massive Russian drone attack near the Hungarian-Ukrainian border. The diplomatic gesture is a clear example that Hungary’s relations with the Russian Federation have radically changed since Viktor Orban is no longer in power and Prime Minister Péter Magyar took office, reports Associated Press.
Ambassador Evgeny Stanislavov left the MAE headquarters less than 30 minutes after his arrival following an official summons. The Russian diplomat had a discussion with the foreign minister Anita Orbán, after the Russians launched a massive attack on the Transcarpathian region of Ukraine, where a significant Hungarian minority resides.
“I told the Russian ambassador that it is completely unacceptable for Hungary that they are now attacking Transcarpathia, the place where the Hungarian minority lives.“
I emphasized that Russia must do everything possible for an immediate ceasefire and for a peaceful and lasting end to the war as soon as possible,” Anita Orbán declared in a social media post after the meeting.
The Russian government has not conveyed any point of view regarding the summons.
When the ambassador left the Foreign Ministry building on the banks of the Danube, an activist shouted at him in Hungarian: “It’s over, comrade!”, according to AP.
Russia launched at least 800 drones in a massive daytime bombardment on Wednesday, targeting about 20 regions in Ukraine, including Transcarpathia, said Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski.
