Switzerland announced on Friday the gradual reopening of its embassy in Iran. The diplomatic mission also represents the interests of the United States, having been temporarily closed on March 11, after Israel and the United States began hostilities.
“Starting this week, a small team from the Swiss embassy has returned to Tehran,” announced the Swiss Federal Department for Foreign Affairs in a statement.
Four embassy employees will prepare for the gradual resumption of diplomatic mission activities. Officials specify that the decision to progressively reopen the embassy was made after a risk assessment and consultations with Iran and the United States.
Switzerland, a country known for its neutrality, has represented American interests in Iran throughout the period since Washington broke diplomatic relations with Tehran following the hostage crisis of 1980, a year after the Islamic Revolution, according to hotnews.ro.
The foreign interests section of the Swiss embassy also offers consular services to American citizens living or traveling in Iran.
