General (ret.) Adriean Pârlog, former head of Romanian military intelligence, explains in an interview for “Adevărul”, what Romania should expect from its American allies and reveals the figures and brutal reality on the Ukrainian front.

American President Donald Trump announced this weekend that the US will send an additional 5,000 troops to Poland. The announcement comes a week after the Pentagon cancelled a planned deployment of 4,000 soldiers to this country. Romania, on the other hand, remains hopeful, at least for now. The American move shows that countries supporting the US obtain certain benefits, even if they are security-related, which is essential for states like Poland and Romania, under the given circumstances.

General (ret.) Adriean Pârlog, former head of Romanian military espionage, explains in an interview for “Adevărul”, what Romania should expect from its American allies and reveals the figures and brutal reality on the front: from the mutual blockade of the armies, to the identification of the secret factory where the Russians assemble the most dangerous attack drones.

The Truth: The news of the week, if not of the entire year for the Eastern flank of NATO, is that Trump has decided to send an additional 5,000 troops to Poland. How should this decision be understood?

General Adriean Pârlog: This moment, probably, is currently centered on the conflict in Iran and is a turning point for the future intensity of the West’s involvement, as we were used to considering the West, with two pillars across the Atlantic, a North American pillar and a European one. This time, the conflict in Iran comes and, if you will, completes the security demands generated by the conflict in Ukraine, in the sense that it will give a greater or lesser note, primarily, to the cohesive dimension of the North Atlantic Alliance. The way the conflict in Ukraine unfolded during the Biden administration is totally different from the way the United States’ involvement in Ukraine continues, with Western Europe in particular remaining faithful to the initial commitments made immediately after February 2022. In the evolutionary perspective of things, after Donald Trump’s arrival at the White House and after the presidential elections in Poland and Romania, we are rather witnessing an increase in the potential of supporters who rather see a decrease in European involvement, especially Central and Eastern European, in the conflict in Ukraine, especially as a result of Poland’s new attitude. Nawrocki’s arrival at the presidency of Poland does nothing but accentuate what was shaping up some time ago in relation to the area of tension between Warsaw and Berlin, in the sense that Poland often brought to the center of its discussions on the bilateral relationship Poland-Germany the subject of a historical debt that the Poles invoked. The distance, if you will, has deepened, or the distance between the president and the prime minister of Poland has increased.

    And Romania?

In Romania, the line of conduct is relatively constant, centered on Ukraine, in the sense that Romania continues the way in which it will further offer its support to Kiev, in a line of continuity with what it offered before the election of President Dan in this position.

Europe is more concerned with logistic management and ensuring Ukraine’s security, as much as Western Europe in general, the European Union, can do. And much less in the direction of joining the consistent effort that the United States and Israel are making to resolve the conflict centered on Iran.

Poland and Romania, as the most powerful NATO and EU member states in direct practical contact, and to a lesser extent, I would say, Bulgaria, in direct contact with Ukraine, continue this line. President Trump rather dissatisfiedly noted the lack of appetite regarding Germany, France, and even the UK’s involvement alongside Washington in increasing the impact force of the Western bloc in relation to the situation in Iran. At present, the United States has made a rather decisive decision, in the sense that they have put into practice the idea of reducing military presence, human force in Western Europe, especially in Germany. And after initially announcing a reduction of military presence in the East, in Poland and even in Romania, at the moment the idea seems to have been not abandoned, but in any case diminished as an impact force and combined with intentions in Western Europe. In the sense that what the Americans had in Western Europe decreases by about 5,000 soldiers who are not withdrawn to the United States, but are relocated, for now in Poland, effectively increasing the American contingent present in Poland from 10,000 to 15,000 soldiers.
