French President Emmanuel Macron, who will be “in contact with his European counterparts all day”, will call for the “activation of the EU’s anti-coercion instrument” if the threats of additional tariffs made by Donald Trump are implemented, sources from his entourage announced on Sunday.
This instrument, whose implementation requires a qualified majority of EU countries, allows, among other things, the freezing of access to European public markets or the blocking of certain investments, writes Agerpres.
Also, the American trade threats “raise the issue of the validity of the agreement” on tariffs concluded between the European Union and the USA in July last year, revealed a close associate of the French president.
Donald Trump threatened on Saturday several European countries – Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland – that he will impose additional tariffs until “an agreement for the complete and integral sale of Greenland” is concluded.
This surcharge, of 10%, will become effective from February 1 and could reach 25% on June 1, Trump declared.
