The head of European diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, drew a direct parallel between the war in Ukraine and that of the USA against Iran, stating that the two conflicts represent “the greatest violations of international law since World War II,” reports Politico.
“The disintegration of international law is evident today, as a result of the two biggest global crises – Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and the war in the Middle East,” stated Kallas, in a speech at the UN Security Council, in New York.
“Together, the crises in Europe and the Middle East represent the clearest signal that the old rules, including the UN charter, are being abandoned,” she continued.
Kallas stated that the Russian invasion begun in 2022 is the “most outrageous violation of international laws,” but also said about the current US-Iran war that it is part of the same systemic erosion of the rule-based international relations system.
She warned that the war in Iran, which quickly engulfed all neighboring Gulf countries, has “caused massive instability and cost too many lives”, while sending shock waves through the global energy markets and supply chains.
