Great Britain imposed sanctions on Wednesday on a pro-Russian non-governmental organization, Eurasia, who they claim attempted to tamper with the referendum on the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the European Union and undermine democratic processes in the country, announced the British Foreign Ministry, quoted by Reuters.
The sanctions include freezing assets and travel bans for the organization based in Russia, as well as for its founder, Nelli Parutenco, and board member, Natalia Parasca.According to British authorities, the Evrazia network is controlled by oligarch Ilan Șor, who is currently in Russia. Șor has already been sanctioned by London in 2022 for corruption, and Evrazia was also targeted by sanctions from the European Union in October 2024.”When dirty money circulates freely, public trust is eroded, economies are destabilized, and malicious actors undermine the rule of law,” said British Foreign Minister David Lammy. He mentioned that the United Kingdom will not ignore attempts to destabilize democracies in countries it considers partners and friends. These measures are part of a broader British campaign against corruption, which also targets other countries such as Georgia and Guatemala.
