A hacker is alleged to have stolen a massive collection of sensitive data – including classified defense documents and sketches of missiles and modern weapons – by accessing a Chinese supercomputer, which could constitute the largest known data theft from China, according to CNN.

The dataset, which would have contained over 10 petabytes of sensitive information, is considered by experts to have been obtained from the National Supercomputing Center (NSCC) in Tianjin – a centralized center that provides infrastructure services for over 6,000 clients in China, including advanced scientific and defense agencies.

Cybersecurity experts who have spoken with the alleged hacker and analyzed samples of the stolen data that he posted online say that he seems to have entered the massive computer with relative ease and managed to extract huge amounts of data over several months without being detected.

An account self-styled as FlamingChina posted a sample of the alleged data set on an anonymous Telegram channel on February 6, claiming that it contains “research in various fields, including aerospace engineering, military research, bioinformatics, fusion simulation, and many more.”

The group asserts that the information is related to “top organizations”, including the Aviation Industry Corporation of China, the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, and the National University of Defense Technology.
