Two Russian scientists involved in the production and development of hypersonic weapons have been sentenced to 12 and a half years in prison each, on charges of treason, according to Russian publications The Moscow Times and Kommersant-Siberia as reported by Militarnîi.
The two researchers – physicists Valeri Zveghințev and Vladislav Galkin will serve their sentence in a maximum security prison.
Physicists were accused of treason after they published a study on “gas dynamics” in a scientific publication from Iran.
Valeri Zveghințev was a scientific researcher at the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (ITAM), where he laid the foundations of the High-Speed Aerodynamics Laboratory.
Vladislav Galkin was a colleague of Zveghințev. Both researchers were convicted under Article 275 of the Russian Penal Code.
The article signed by the two Russian scientists, published in the Iranian journal, dealt with the technical aspects of the intake ducts of supersonic aircraft. Before being published, the article was reviewed by two independent experts, who found that the information published in it did not represent any state secret.
The technologies described in the scientific article are related to the development of hypersonic missiles developed by Russia in the recent period, such as Kinjal, Zircon, Avangard, or Sarmat (“Satan”).
