Far from our sight, over 2000 kilometers above the Earth, a conflict is already unfolding without spectacular explosions or official declarations of war. It has no trenches, no classic fronts. However, it does have silent orbiting satellites and states sharpening their ambitions.

For centuries, wars have been fought on land, at sea, or in the air. Today, the “final frontier” – outer space – is becoming a new strategic theater. And the increasingly aggressive plans of the Kremlin, in the midst of the war unleashed by Vladimir Putin against Ukraine, are unsettling Western leaders.

A potential Third World War fought in space would not just mean technological duels between the great powers. It would mean darkness for ordinary people, say experts consulted by The Sun.

    A global blackout

If satellites were neutralized, cities could be left without electricity. Communication networks would collapse. GPS would become useless. Supermarkets would be emptied in a few hours by panicked people, convinced that the apocalypse has begun.

Entire societies would be left without military coordination and early warning systems. Capitals would become vulnerable to ballistic missiles. And the chaos would not just be technological, but also social.

Although treaties such as the 1967 Outer Space Treaty prohibit the placement of weapons of mass destruction in orbit, reality suggests that the great powers are constantly testing the limits.
